While I Write

Day 21 of 28 Days of Unreason

“Like many poets I’m part blackbird and part red squirrel and my brain chatters, shrieks, and whistles” – Jim Harrison

Hounds of hell
sinister souls
bark that rivals their bite

sniff around for tiny morsels
gnash teeth until they might
be released from their chains.

Raspy barn owl
big-eyed surprise
tap dances a tinny tune all night
down the chimney, soot-soaked
flaps its wings in plight
w
onders if it’s getting through.

Skittering squirrel
three-foot-tall distraction
stuffs its face with wild
laughter, shrieking demands
like those of a small child
tosses twigs and jumps from wires.

All while I write.
